How does a photographer’s background influence his/her style?
Steve had undertaken a photo shoot with a model, Mischkah Scott, for a series honoring the surrealist photographer Man Ray. At the end of that session, Mischkah was asked to pose with a carved walking stick. She struck a large number of poses, dancing across the screen like a performer doing an old-time vaudeville routine. Steve then invited Seneka, one of his oldest friends from Sri Lanka, to collaborate on creating a series of Mischkah images, approaching the post processing from their respective styles. Seneka adopted a poster-style of editing, combined with a variety of lighting effects so as to accentuate her beauty and to give the pictures a soft, dreamy interpretation. Steve altered the backgrounds, saturation and lighting to emphasize movement, contrast and Mischkah’s natural grace. The result is a photographic performance piece. Stated simply, the series is just about a girl with a cane. But deep down, it is also about how beauty and friendship combine.
