The answers is: you do not talk about the Fight Club.
"It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything."
----Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club
In December 2018, the Underground Sports School opened in Amsterdam. I was invited to the opening night festivities because one of our daughters helped to found Underground.
Chuck Palahniuk's book, the Fight Club, was the inspiration for the Underground Sports School. In Fight Club,an insomniac office worker meets Tyler Durden on a flight home. Tyler seems to be everything that he's not and together they create a men-only group for bare-knuckle fighting. This soon becomes all the rage with fight clubs springing up across the country and eventually, the group itself becomes an anti-capitalist domestic terrorist organization.
At the opening of the Underground Sports School, well-wishers were invited to share a drink and to join in for some boxing and a fitness lesson.Meandering around that evening, I was able to capture some images of the celebrating and the punching. Many people, both young and old, took to the boxing ring and to the punching bags that night.
At the time, little did we imagine that just a few years later, gyms would be shuttered while many are struggling just to stay alive. Looking back, the enthusiasm on the faces of those attending the opening night of the Underground Sports School serves as a reminder of the days when a "good fight" was how Amsterdam's young professionals chose to relax.
