Which actor would play you in the story of your life?
Two years ago, I made my first "Big Fish" photo series. A redheaded Irish model, Maya Sullivan, posed for that series with a wild bass. Those photos were incorporated into office scenes to comment on the fact that a "big fish" (i.e. the big boss) might have some measure of authority, but that office-power is as real as a naked woman carrying a big fish. Images of Maya and the big fish were also incorporated into photos of libraries, to make the point that these old-fashioned libraries had reservoirs of knowledge as deep as the deep blue seas.
This year, Anna Johannson, a blond model from Sweden, posed with another "big fish". Her photos were integrated into travel snapshots that I had taken over many years. In that series, Anna and the "big fish" were traveling the world, at least in my imagination, while I was stuck here in Holland.
Although I didn't realize it at the time, these "big fish" stories were very much autobiographical, with my role played by the "big fish". Accordingly, this series of selfies celebrates my aquatic-avatar, the "big fish" and his delightful traveling companions, Maya and Anna. Like a fish-out-of-the-water, my stand-in gets tossed around this way and that, but manages to stay serenely afloat. If you'd like to see the full series, download the PDF catalogue here.
