What is a market?

Markets are much more than just centers of commerce. What would urban life be without the colors, smells, sights and excitement that markets bring?

People gather in markets to do their shopping; to have a quick bite to eat; to drink a cup of coffee; or to have a chat with friends and neighbors. Markets are vibrant---crowds move from stall to stall; sellers call out their bargains; orders are taken and given; and ultimately money and goods change hands.

This series presents scenes from open air markets in Africa, Asia and Europe. While each market is different in its own way, all convey the excitement that market day brings.
