Mourners and Swimmers

What connects life and death?

On Friday the 14th of October 2022, I was walking through Park Gradac, on the outskirts of Dubrovnik's old town. An old friend of mine had passed away that week, and he was due to be buried that day. Looking out from the park to the waterside, I saw that there was a funeral taking place in a church built on the rocks overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Right next to the church was a bathing spot on the same rocks for swimmers. While one group was mourning, another group were toweling off after an afternoon's swim. The contrast between the two groups could hardly have been greater, but somehow the calming waters of the Adriatic Sea managed to create a time and place for each to call their own.
