(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay

The song "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay" was co-written by soul singer Otis Redding and guitarist Steve Cropper in 1967. It was last recorded by Otis Redding just three days before he died in a plane crash and was then released by Stax Records in 1968. Steve Cropper wrote most of the lyrics and declared that it was about Otis Redding's time living on a houseboat in the San Francisco bay.

Figuratively, the song is about trying to find the beauty in life despite the hopelessness that we all have sometimes to deal with. In addition, I find that the song is very much about the calm that comes from simply staring out at the water as the tides roll in and out, again.

I've had the opportunity to spend summers in Bouzigues, France where I have often stood by the dock early in the morning, transfixed by the water as it rolls in and out with the tides. In this series, my wife Anneke models for these images at the dockside by the Bouzigues shore.
