On 27 April 2022, King's Day was celebrated in Holland. After a two year pandemic-pause, the streets were packed with people partying. Dancing went on late into the night; little children sold second-hand clothes and toys on blankets in the streets; lots of fresh baked goods and pastries were for sale; food trucks did a brisk business; bands were playing; kegs of beer were drunk; and carnival rides kept the little ones busy.
At one point, we passed a bungee-jumping carnival ride located in front of the oldest cinema in the city, the Lido. From the other side of the canal, I spent a few minutes shooting the children bouncing up-and-down on the bungee ride. This made me think of "bouncing back" as a hopeful metaphor for life after the pandemic.
In this photo series, I also employ slight changes of perspective to illustrate the role that composition plays in interpreting a fast-moving scene. Finally, the front and back covers are a pair of street cats who didn't seem to take much notice of the festivities at all.
