The 16th annual Amsterdam Tattoo Convention was held from the 16th to the 18th of September 2022. The event was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid, but was back, bigger than ever, in 2022. The 2022 convention was held in the NDSM warehouse, which has stood majestically at the IJ waterfront for almost a hundred years. The warehouse is part of the former NDSM shipyard, and is a graffiti-covered monument to this old industrial area.
Wandering about the Convention, I couldn't help but conclude that one certainly shouldn't "judge a book by its' cover". Those who were the most aggressively tattooed and pierced, were just everyday, sweet guys and gals. And with so many tattoo artists assembling in Amsterdam from all over the world, there was something incredibly precious about a visual language that crosses borders so easily.
This series includes a set of images taken at the 2022 Convention. Most of these are presented in black-and-white because the vivid tattoo colors can sometimes draw attention away from the remarkable skill and detail of the tattoos.
